Method and evidence

The arithmetic is simple. The evidence choice is not.

CRA’s foreign-currency memorandum separates the conversion calculation from the choice of date, method, and supportable rate source. This tool records your choices; it does not choose them for you.

01

Choose the conversion date and method

The general GST/HST rule uses the day tax is payable. CRA also describes accepted alternatives, including payment day, the day foreign currency is acquired, and a monthly average for the relevant month. Use a selected method consistently for a reasonable period.

02

Preserve the source and gross amount

CRA lists the Bank of Canada and several other rate sources as acceptable when their use is supportable and consistent. Keep processor fees separate from the gross converted consideration rather than silently netting them.

Educational scope

A conversion record does not classify the supply.

The result does not decide whether the invoice is taxable, zero-rated, exempt, made in Canada, included in the C$30,000 threshold, or reportable in a particular period. Bank of Canada daily rates are indicative. Confirm the applicable conversion method and tax treatment before relying on the record.

Keep the whole decision together

Pair the conversion record with the invoice facts.

The C$19 Action Kit adds a guided foreign-client workflow, evidence prompts, both threshold tests, and a fillable workbook for the questions that arithmetic alone cannot resolve.
