Start with the tax-included total
Use the final amount paid or charged after the general sales taxes were added.
Enter a tax-included Canadian total, choose the province or territory, and estimate the original subtotal plus the GST, HST, PST, QST, or RST already inside it. The amount stays in your browser.
Choose a province or territory to see the subtotal, separate tax lines, total tax, and final total.
These examples start with a fully taxable C$100 subtotal, add the selected jurisdiction’s general tax, then reverse the final amount back to C$100.
| Province or territory | Tax-included total | Estimated pre-tax price | Tax inside the total | Displayed tax lines |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ontario | $113.00 | $100.00 | $13.00 | HST $13.00 |
| Nova Scotia | $114.00 | $100.00 | $14.00 | HST $14.00 |
| Quebec | $114.98 | $100.00 | $14.98 | GST $5.00 + QST $9.98 |
| British Columbia | $112.00 | $100.00 | $12.00 | GST $5.00 + PST $7.00 |
| Alberta | $105.00 | $100.00 | $5.00 | GST $5.00 |
A tax rate is a percentage of the pre-tax price, not of the final total. That is why simply subtracting 13% from an Ontario total gives the wrong base.
Use the final amount paid or charged after the general sales taxes were added.
For Ontario, C$113 ÷ 1.13 = C$100. For Québec, C$114.98 ÷ 1.14975 is approximately C$100.
The calculator rounds the subtotal and each displayed tax to cents, then reconciles any final cent to the exact total entered.
For an ordinary fully taxable amount, divide the tax-included total by the factor shown. Product-specific taxability and provincial rules can change the correct treatment.
| Province or territory | General tax system | Combined rate | Divide total by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alberta AB | GST | 5% | 1.05 |
| British Columbia BC | GST + PST | 12% | 1.12 |
| Manitoba MB | GST + RST | 12% | 1.12 |
| New Brunswick NB | HST | 15% | 1.15 |
| Newfoundland and Labrador NL | HST | 15% | 1.15 |
| Northwest Territories NT | GST | 5% | 1.05 |
| Nova Scotia NS | HST | 14% | 1.14 |
| Nunavut NU | GST | 5% | 1.05 |
| Ontario ON | HST | 13% | 1.13 |
| Prince Edward Island PE | HST | 15% | 1.15 |
| Quebec QC | GST + QST | 14.975% | 1.14975 |
| Saskatchewan SK | GST + PST | 11% | 1.11 |
| Yukon YT | GST | 5% | 1.05 |
This page assumes the selected jurisdiction’s current general rate applies to the whole amount. It does not determine taxability, place of supply, exemptions, zero-rating, point-of-sale rebates, special rates, registration, input tax credits, or provincial collection duties. A receipt may also differ by a cent because of item-level or register rounding.
Divide the tax-included total by 1.13. For example, C$113 divided by 1.13 is C$100 before HST, leaving C$13 of HST inside the total.
The 13% HST was calculated from the smaller pre-tax amount. Subtracting 13% of C$113 produces C$98.31, while dividing C$113 by 1.13 correctly returns C$100.
For a fully taxable amount at the general rates, divide the total by 1.14975. Revenu Québec states that 5% GST and 9.975% QST are each calculated on the selling price excluding GST.
A register may round each item or tax line before adding the receipt. This calculator reverses one final total, rounds to cents, and reconciles the displayed components to the amount entered.
Use it as an educational estimate and arithmetic check. Filing requires the actual invoice or receipt, the correct tax treatment, eligible input tax credit evidence, and the applicable federal and provincial rules.
