Nova Scotia HST calculator: add or remove 14% tax.

Calculate Nova Scotia’s current general 14% HST from a before-tax amount, or extract it from a tax-included total. The rate changed from 15% on April 1, 2025, so the page keeps current arithmetic and transition timing separate.

Current Nova Scotia math

Add 14%, total with 1.14, or reverse by dividing.

When a supply is fully taxable at Nova Scotia’s current general HST rate, one relationship produces the tax, final total, and reverse calculation.

× 0.14

Find the HST

Multiply a before-tax subtotal by 0.14. On C$100.00, the estimated Nova Scotia HST is C$14.00.

× 1.14

Find the tax-included total

Multiply the subtotal by 1.14. C$100.00 before tax becomes C$114.00 after 14% HST.

÷ 1.14

Remove HST from a total

Divide a tax-included total by 1.14. C$114.00 reverses to C$100.00 before tax and C$14.00 HST.

April 1, 2025 rate change

Current calculations use 14%; older transactions may preserve 15%.

CRA Notice 342 says the general transition turns on when consideration became due or was paid, not simply when the work happened. Special supplies and adjustments can follow different details.

Before Apr. 1

Earlier due or paid amounts generally use 15%

If consideration became due or was paid before April 1, 2025, the former 15% rate generally applies under the transition rules.

On/after Apr. 1

Later due or paid amounts generally use 14%

The 14% rate generally applies when consideration became due or was paid on or after April 1, without the other event occurring earlier.

Original rate

Adjustments can follow the original supply

Price adjustments, rebates, ongoing arrangements, real property, allowances, and reimbursements need the applicable CRA transition rule—not a calculator guess.

Use the result within its scope

The calculator assumes the current 14% rate already applies.

This tool assumes a fully taxable amount in Canadian dollars made in Nova Scotia under the current general rate. It does not determine place of supply, taxability, zero-rating, exemptions, point-of-sale rebates, registration, the 2025 transition result, special property rules, or filing treatment. Confirm those facts before invoicing or claiming an input tax credit.

Questions behind the number

Six checks before you use 14% on a Nova Scotia transaction.

01

What is the current HST rate in Nova Scotia?

The current general HST rate is 14%, made up of a 5% federal part and a 9% provincial part. The rate took effect April 1, 2025.

02

How much is Nova Scotia HST on C$100?

For an amount fully taxable at the current 14% rate, HST is C$14.00 and the tax-included total is C$114.00.

03

How do I remove Nova Scotia HST from a total?

Divide the tax-included total by 1.14 to estimate the before-tax amount, then subtract that subtotal from the total. Rounding can produce a one-cent difference on an invoice.

04

When did Nova Scotia HST change from 15% to 14%?

The rate decreased on April 1, 2025. Transactions spanning that date require the CRA transition rules; the transaction or service date alone may not settle the rate.

05

Can a 2025 invoice still use 15% HST?

Yes, depending on when consideration became due or was paid and which transition rule applies. Use CRA Notice 342 for goods, services, subscriptions, adjustments, allowances, and reimbursements, and separate guidance for real property.

06

Do I charge 14% just because my business is in Nova Scotia?

No. The applicable GST/HST rate generally depends on the place of supply and the transaction’s facts, not only the seller’s address.
